The Rev. John Backe

NATIONAL COUNCIL MEMBER

The Rev. John Backe is an ordained pastor in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America who has served congregations and programs throughout the New York City metro region as well as Syracuse, New York, and Denver, Colorado. He joined the Fellowship of Reconciliation as a draft resister to the Vietnam war at age 20, and he has participated in a wide range of FOR programs for racial, economic, and social justice for more than a half-century.

John served for 10 years as national coordinator of the Lutheran Peace Fellowship, one of the communities of religious peace fellowships working in partnership with FORusa. His ministry — utilizing advocacy, theater and creative arts, education, and organizing — has always been alongside and with people in situations of homelessness, hunger, HIV/AIDS, mental health issues, hospice care, and prison.

A resident of New York City, the primary nourishment for his life is his children and grandchildren, who he is blessed to live near.
