FOR-USA NATIONAL COUNCIL SECRETARY
Chrissy Nesbitt is a founding member of the Rose of Sharon Catholic Worker community in Durham, NC. She grew up Catholic in the Philadelphia area, and her early sense of God and justice was shaped by the nuns who taught her in school.
Chrissy was further formed by her time at the St. Francis Inn in Philadelphia, Jonah House, Sisters Academy of Baltimore, and the Carmelite Monastery of Baltimore, as well as the Silk Hope Catholic Worker and Alderson Hospitality House. The experience of living and working in these communities cemented for her the spiritual importance of teaching, contemplative prayer, providing food and warmth, and taking personal risks to disrupt the violence of the status quo. A member of Witness Against Torture and a supporter of the Plowshares movement, Chrissy has served as prison support person and media team member.
Chrissy’s most recent work has included organizing direct action with former inmates housed in North Carolina prison system’s “COVID motels,” supporting hunger strikers at NC’s Alexander Correctional Institution, and currently refounding the Rose of Sharon Catholic Worker as a consensus-run tiny house community. The first of these collaboratively built houses was completed in April 2025, and Chrissy lives there with her partner Greg, two children Abbie and Elisha, and their dog Iris.
