Marla Carter is the U.S. Controller for Fellowship of Reconciliation (FORusa), a role held since September 2015. With a background steeped in finance, public accounting and auditing, she is a detail-oriented strategic thinker who brings a personal passion for world peace into her daily practice.
Marla works with FOR through Your Part-Time Controller, LLC (YPTC), an outsourced accounting firm that specializes in providing financial management services to the nonprofit sector and serves nearly 500 nonprofit organizations across the country. Marla was yearning for an opportunity to use her skills for the greater good, and the nonprofit sector was rife with companies effecting real positive change. Drawn to FOR’s interfaith mission of achieving peace through the transformative power of nonviolence, she now prides herself in sharing her expertise in support of a cause she fully embraces.
Prior to working with YPTC and FORusa, Marla was Vice President of Finance for Upstream Healthcare Management, LLC for three years, where, among other things, she managed the company’s financial reporting process as well as the accounting activities for 26 entities and five payrolls. She joined Upstream following three years as Senior Accountant for Elliot Horowitz and Company, LLP, where her responsibilities ranged from financial reviews, audits and compilations to tax returns, budgets and investment analysis. Marla’s previous work involved posts for Bederson and Company LLP, Grant Thornton, LLP and Pereira & Azevedo, LLC.
A graduate of New Jersey’s Kean University, Marla holds both a Master of Science and a Bachelor of Science in Accounting degrees. She is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and a member of the AICPA and NJCPA.
Much like the structure of FORusa, Marla’s own family is a blending of multiple faiths. Her father was Jewish, yet she was raised Roman Catholic and married a Baptist. When she’s not working, she enjoys riding her bike, and sharing pictures of her cat, Pebbles, on Facebook.
