Action Alert: Afghan youth denied U.S. visa

The Fellowship of Reconciliation was deeply saddened to receive the following information today from peace colleagues in Afghanistan. We ask our supporters to take action to respond to a visa denial just issued by the U.S. State Department.

Hearts and Minds

“What I’m really telling people is the greatest risk we can accept is to lose the support of the people here [in Afghanistan],” said U.S. Gen. Stanley McChrystal, in a September 2009 interview aired on CBS’s “60 Minutes” program. “If the people are against us, we cannot be successful. If the people view us as occupiers and the enemy, we can’t be successful and our casualties will go up dramatically.”

When two bulls fight, it is the shrubs and other plants that suffer. (Afghan proverb)

Each day, some 850 Afghan children die from largely preventable deaths: diarrhea, tuberculosis, malnutrition, unsafe drinking water. An Afghan woman dies related to childbirth every 30 minutes. Afghanistan now has the highest infant mortality and second highest maternal mortality rates in the world.
