'Soldier Girls': Women in the Military

Kick-off Event for the AFSC's Truth and Recruitment Event Series

"March to Justice in July"

A few words from tour member Isaac Martin

With us on the Drop Beats Not Bombs tour are Invincible, Paula Galeano, Not Your Soldier facilitator Isaac Martin, & FOR staff Liza Smith and Maryrose Dolezal. Missing from the tour, at the moment, are tour members Shauen Pearce and Brie Phillips. Shauen participated in the tour launch in St. Paul last week, and Brie will be joining at the stop in Allentown, PA next weekend. Shauen and Brie are providing back up from the offices in St. Paul and Washington DC.

Tour member Isaac Martin joined at the last minute due to staff illnesses to lead workshop facilitation. He has also been invaluable in helping with merchandise sales, translation, and packing the van! Isaac has been journaling about his experience along the way – check it out below, and check back for more soon!

A little food for thought..

Amongst peace and justice- oriented folks, it's fairly safe to say that your first choice for a resolution to any conflict is calm, rational dialogue, right?. Many people reading this might even say that an open dialogue is the ONLY solution to conflict - why should we need war, aggression or threats to work out our differences? But what about in regards to conflicts with your parents, siblings, children if you have them, signifiant others, or the occasional annoying stranger? Are we able to hold ourselves to the high standards (and really hold ourselves accountable) to the grand ideals that we have in place for others?

About NYC

Who is FOR? Who is the Nonviolent Youth Collective?

The Fellowship of Reconciliation (FOR) seeks to replace violence, war, racism, and economic injustice with nonviolence, peace, and justice. We are a 90 year old, international, multi-faith organization committed to active nonviolence as a transforming way of life and as a means of radical change. We educate, train, build coalitions, and engage in nonviolent and compassionate actions locally, nationally, and globally.

Backlash for Anti-War HS Walk Out in Tukwila, WA

In Minneapolis and its neighboring areas, MN Youth Against War and Racism (YAWR) organized a High School Walk Out Against the War which brought out over 800 students from high schools and some middle schools on November 16, 2007. Youth Against War and Racism in the Midwest has been a main collaborator with the Nonviolent Youth Collective of the Fellowship of Reconciliation in its Truth and Recruitment work. During YAWR's meeting post-walk out, we found out more about the situation with students who had walked out in Washington State (and more specifically about the students at Foster High School in Tukwila, WA).

The situation developing there has now been named: the Tukwila 6.

Counter it!

Counter It!

Minnesota’s antiwar youth training camp

Last summer the Pentagon was busy preparing for an ambitious “surge” in military recruitment to meet the bipartisan plan to expand the military by 92,000 troops. At the same time, young people in Minnesota were also busy preparing our response.
Twenty two young activists – high school and college students as well as several trainers – gathered for four days in August at Garden Farme in Ramsey, MN to develop our skills and strategy. Organized by Youth Against War & Racism in partnership with the Fellowship of Reconciliation, the Ruckus Society, and others, the “Counter It! Training” was a great success.

Don't Let Our Minivan Fool You

MinivanWe have 1200 miles to drive and a minivan to get us there: our fall ‘08 Drop Beats Not Bombs tour includes 15 stops in 6 states, launching in Minneapolis and ending in New York city. But the minivan is only the cover of this book and not to be judged: inside we are hip hop, we are action, art, community across borders, a laboratory of resistance and visions of another world that is possible, a world that is being formed, built and created as we speak.
