The Fellowship of Reconciliation (FOR), begun in 1914, is an interfaith peace organization of those who have joined together to explore the power of love and truth for resolving human conflict.  While it has always been vigorous in its opposition to war and nuclear weapons, the FOR has insisted equally that this effort be based on a commitment to achieving a just and peaceful world community, with full dignity and freedom for every human being.  FOR’s mission is to promote faith-based nonviolence.

I.  Definition:

Formulates and implements financial policies, personnel guidelines, benefits coordination, vendor contracts, operating procedures and controls in the administration and finance departments, and performs general administrative duties for religious, pacifist organization.

II. Distinguishing Characteristics:

The Director of Operations is directly responsible for oversight of bookkeeping, investments, payroll, budget preparation and monitoring, audit, building maintenance and use, personnel and tax records, equipment maintenance, purchasing office and building supplies, department staffing, and support of National Council meetings and coordination of logistics for national program training events and delegations.

III. Nature, Scope and Typical Work:

  • Supervises all FOR finances and advises the National Executive Director, Finance Committee Chair, Treasurer, Accountants and Investment Advisory Committee, and Administration.  This includes handling financial records, investment reports, and the FOR pension fund.
  • Supervises budget control for expenditures, maintains purchase order system, reviews expenditures with National Executive Director and other staff as necessary.
  • Oversees equipment purchases and contracts for all office machines, inventory and supplies for all staff (phones, copy machines, typewriters, air conditioners, computers, etc.).
  • Responsible for regulatory compliance and reporting. Consults FOR’s lawyers and accountants as needed, to ensure compliance with regulations for 501(c)(3) organizations.
  • Responsible for time records, health insurance and other employee benefits. Supervises payroll production by Bookkeeper.
  • Responsible for hiring and firing of staff within the administrative/finance department, directing work activities, reviewing work products, developing performance objectives identifying training needs and conducting staff evaluations, in accordance with relevant FOR policies.  
  • Deploys staff to effectively accomplish day-to-day work, including opening mail, answering the phone, ordering supplies, maintaining and effectively utilizing office machinery, phones and office space.
  • Works with the Holding Company and caretaking services to ensure Shadowcliff upkeep, including cleaning, regular inspection, upkeep, solicitation of bids for repair and capital improvement.  Working with same, oversees use of Shadowcliff, and formulates and implements policy related to safety and security issues.
  • Advises National Executive Director on policies and other issues impacting the larger FOR organization.
  • Participates in all interdepartmental meetings.
  • Attends Finance Committee, Holding Committee, Executive Committee, Administrative Committee, and National Council meetings.

Qualifications:

  • Strong commitment to faith-based nonviolence, multiculturalism and FOR’s mission and vision.
  • Good interpersonal skills: ability to relate to and communicate orally and in writing with staff, National Council members and FOR members.
  • Awareness of and commitment to socially responsible investment.
  • Ability to supervise staff to accomplish day-to-day work effectively.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage financial and physical resources, including budget control.  Demonstrated experience overseeing contracts.
  • Knowledge of financial and accounting principles and a familiarity with computerized accounting.
  • Knowledge of basic software programs (e.g. MS Office programs, Fund EZ accounting software a plus)
  • Knowledge of personnel policies and procedures such as leave, overtime, comp time and basic rules of conduct.
  • Ability to plan future work procedures and anticipate future needs.
  • Knowledge of filing systems.

Hours Per Week:  35+ (Full-time)

Salary Category: D Band ($49,000 mminimum). Please indicate salary requirements.
