Army Kills Edilberto Vásquez Cardona

We demand that the state end its extermination of us.

Among so much anguish, fear and pain there is something that unites all these feelings: dignity. Because of that we don't remain silent, for that they have had to kill us standing up and with our heads held high. This is a statement of dignity, fruit of the cry and terror generated by the killer state.

Today, January 12, 2006, the army killed EDILBERTO VASQUEZ CARDONA, 53 years old, member of the humanitarian zone of Arenas Altas. Edilberto was the first leader of the Arenas Altas humanitarian zone, and was replaced by Arlen Salas, also killed by the army.

At about 7 p.m. on January 11, Edilberto went to bed in his house located between Arenas Altas and Guineo Alto, together with his 12-year-old son. On the morning of January 12, the army came very early to his house and forced him to leave. Twenty minutes from his house in the Arenas Altas community farm, Edilberto was killed by shots from the army at 7:15 a.m.

At the same time, at a community farm located 150 meters from where Edilberto was killed, the army fired at the house where there were two people from our community. The couple managed to run away, fleeing the gunfire and grenades that the army fired at them.

Later, Edilberto's young son went down to San Josecito where he told what happened. Immediately the Ombudsman's office was called, and they went to San Josecito. When the Ombudsman's office asked the army if something had happened, they answered that they had taken out a guerrilla who carried a radio, gun and grenades.

At about 11 a.m., the army brought down the body of Edilberto to San José and refused to allow his family to identify him. Seeing this, a commission of the Ombudsman's office and family member was created to go to Edilberto's house, where they arrived at about 1 p.m. There they found signs that said "national army counter-guerrilla 33". They also confirmed the testimony of witnesses when they found some of Edilberto's blood and brains 20 minutes from the house.

The facts say everything: the same killer who nearly a year ago ended the life of eight people, now bring their machinery of terror to Arenas Altas, where in November they already had killed Arlen. It is evident that the government is doing everything to annihilate us and to justify their killing actions they call us guerrillas, they tie us up, they take out of our houses, they cut us up and wash their hands with the permanent lie: they're guerrillas.

The brazenness is total, the extermination of the community is evident, the humanitarian zones are military targets of the public forces, and the campesinos are prisoners to hunt and exterminate.

But the impudence of the state is not limited to killing us with cowardice and impunity. Without a single act of justice against this extermination, the Prosecutor's office ha called Gildardo Tuberquia, a member of the community's council, to give testimony. For the Prosecutor's office, for the government, the victims are perpetrators and the perpetrators are victims. But in the face of this injustice we will not yield or turn back. The state can do away with us, it can take our life as it is doing, it will lock us up, but our dignity will never be taken away. It will be our dignity that makes it that they will be judged by humanity some day.

Edilberto, thank you for your contributions, for your life. Your nine children continue with the community building the reality of a world different from death and war, a world of life and justice.

We are grateful for the expressions of national and international solidarity, to all those who can never remain quiet with the injustice and weapons that blind the lives of those who build alternatives for a different world.

EJERCITO ASESINA A EDILBERTO VASQUEZ CARDONA
-EXIGIMOS AL ESTADO QUE CESE SU EXTERMINIO CONTRA NOSOTROS-

Entre tanta angustia, miedo, dolor existe algo que se une a todos estos sentimientos y es la dignidad; por ella no nos quedamos callados, por ella nos han tenido que asesinar de pie y con la frente en alto. Esta es una constancia de dignidad fruto del llanto y el terror generado por un Estado asesino.

Hoy 12 de enero de 2006, el ejército asesinó a EDILBERTO VASQUEZ CARDONA de 53 años de edad, miembro de la zona humanitaria de Arenas Altas. Edilberto fue el primer líder de la zona humanitaria de Arenas Altas y fue remplazado por Arlen, también asesinado por el ejército.

Hacia las 7 p.m. del 11 de enero, EDILBERTO se acostó a dormir en su casa ubicada entre Arenas Altas y Guineo Alto. Junto a él se encontraba su hijo de 12 años. En la mañana del 12 de enero, el ejército llegó muy temprano a su casa y lo hicieron salir a la fuerza. A unos 20 minutos de su casa en la finca de la comunidad de Arenas Altas, EDILBERTO fue asesinado a tiros por el ejército cuando eran las 7:15 a.m.

A esa misma hora, en una finca de la comunidad ubicada a 150 metros de donde matan a EDILBERTO, el ejército dispara a la casa donde se encontraban dos personas de nuestra comunidad. La pareja logra salir corriendo, huyendo de los disparos y las granadas que el ejército lanza contra ellos.

Más tarde, el joven hijo de EDILBERTO baja a San Josesito donde informa de los hechos. Inmediatamente se da aviso a la defensoría que sube a San Josesito. Cuando la defensoría pregunta al ejército si había ocurrido algo, ellos le contestan que han dado de baja a un guerrillero que portaba radio, fusil y granadas.

Hacia las 11 a.m., el ejército baja el cuerpo de EDILBERTO a San José y niegan a su familia poder identificarlo. Al ver esto, se crea una comisión con defensoría y familiares quienes se dirigen a la casa de EDILBERTO y llegan hacia la 1 p.m. Allá encuentran avisos que dicen ejército nacional contraguerrilla 33. Así mismo comprueban el testimonio de los testigos cuando encuentran a 20 minutos de la casa la sangre y los sesos de EDILBERTO.

Los hechos lo dicen todo: los mismos asesinos que acabaron hace casi un año con la vida de ocho personas, ahora llevan su maquinaria de terror a Arenas Altas donde ya en noviembre del año pasado habían asesinado a Arlen. Es evidente que el gobierno está haciendo todo para aniquilarnos y para justificar su accionar de muerte nos tilda de guerrilleros, nos amarra, nos saca de las casas, nos descuartiza y se lava las manos con la mentira de siempre: son guerrilleros.

El descaro es total, el exterminio a la comunidad es evidente, las zonas humanitarias son blanco militar de la fuerza pública, los campesinos somos presas a cazar y exterminar.

Pero la desfachatez del estado no se limita a asesinarnos cobarde e impunemente. Sin que exista un solo hecho de justicia contra este exterminio, la Fiscalía ha llamado a indagatoria a Gildardo Tuberquia miembro del consejo interno. Para la fiscalía, para el gobierno, para el Estado las víctimas somos los victimarios y los victimarios son las víctimas. Pero ante esta injusticia no cederemos ni retrocederemos, nos podrá exterminar el estado, nos quitará la vida como lo esta haciendo, nos encerrará pero la dignidad nunca no la podrá arrebatar y será esta la que nunca los podrá dejar descansar de ser juzgados algún día por la humanidad.

EDILBERTO gracias por tus aportes, por tu vida, tus nueve hijos siguen con la comunidad construyendo la realidad de un mundo diferente al de la muerte y la guerra, un mundo de vida, y justicia.

Agradecemos la solidaridad nacional e internacional, a todos aquellos que no pueden nunca quedarse quietos con la injusticia y con las armas que ciegan las vidas de los que construyen alternativas de un mundo distinto.
