Merging government for the People?
Today, President Obama called on Congress to give him greater authority to merge government agencies—a power last granted to Ronald Reagan. In his usual serious but humble fashion he also announced that the Small Business Administration has been moved to a Cabinet level agency. You might be asking why this matters for those in the peace and justice movement. Great question.
Well, the U.S. has trillions of dollars in debt. That means that each one of us, regardless of documented status, political party affiliation and suburban, rural or urban dwellings carries the weight. This burden will last well over generations if we do not change it now. Plus, streamlining services that we utlize is a win-win. When the government sector grows but the youngest of our members are killed in war are we not destined for failure? When our neighbors are starving across the country and houses are being foreclosed upon how does our security grow? When students cannot afford college because of increasing tuition and decreasing funding of grants and loans the everyone pays a price. Simply put, consolidating the government and streamlining ways to properly serve the People is one step toward increased security.
What do you think about the President’s request?
