On September 20, Dr. Hildegard Goss-Mayr of Vienna, Austria, will receive the Pacem in Terris 2009 Peace and Freedom Award in Davenport, Iowa. Goss-Mayr, often nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize, is a preeminent teacher of nonviolence. The Honorary President of the International Fellowship of Reconciliation, she has taught the theory and practice of active nonviolence throughout the world. Her books and articles have been widely translated and used by social change movements and communities.

A new biography of Goss-Mayr, Marked for Life: The Story of Hildegard Goss-Mayr (New City Press, 2009) was written by Richard Deats, editor emeritus of Fellowship magazine. Dr. Deats will accompany Dr. Goss-Mayr to Davenport for parallel speaking events and book signings.

The 2009 Peace and Freedom Award will be given by Bishop Martin Amos of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Davenport at 3:00 p.m., Sunday September 20 at Christ the King Chapel of St. Ambrose University. The public is invited.

Previous recipients of this prestigeous award include Martin Luther King, Jr., Dorothy Day, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Adolfo Perez Esquivel, Lech Walesa, Mother Theresa, and Sister Helen Prejean.
