Afghan youth tell Obama children: please end the war
In the wake of President Obama's decision to send more troops to Afghanistan, it is more important than ever to listen to the voices of ordinary Afghanis. The Fellowship of Reconciliation has been in dialogue with some young leaders there, and a few days ago — just before the president's announcement — the Afghan Youth Peace Volunteers published a video on YouTube. It is a touching message of peace greetings to Malia & Sasha Obama, the president's daughters, from Afghani girls and boys. Their ordinary, gentle voices speak to love, conscience, and human dignity. An email announcing the video included the following introduction by the young Afghani organizers, who described this message as "their 'firmest' thoughts yet":
It echoes Mankind's vigil for true peace & reconciliation while recognizing & embracing life's harsh realities with courageous love.
Standing together in stirring a heart-storm of love,
meekly & resolutely.
Love is how we'll ask for peace!
Let love refrain from silence. We will have to repent in this generation not merely for the hateful words and actions of the bad people but for the appalling silence of the good people. (Martin Luther King)
The human voice can never reach the distance that is covered by the still small voice of conscience. Where love is, there God is also. (Mohandas Gandhi)
